What are classic celiac symptoms?

Common questions asked are: “Could I be celiac?” | “What are classic celiac symptoms?” | “Is it true there are 300 listed symptoms?”

Doctor said “your symptoms don’t fit”

Someone at my Clinic said “My local Doctor said that I don’t fit the symptoms for celiac (coeliac)” – she went on: “I have the following symptoms:

  • Irritable bowel;
  • Gastric reflux;
  • Bad tummy bloating;
  • I am depressed and moody;
  • I have lost about 13kgs in the last 8 months;
  • Also I have got a skin rash on elbows and knees.

Could I be celiac – my iron tests are low as well. What do I do next?”

My answer:
“Yes! – You have most of the classic symptoms of celiac disease. Maybe you should ask your local Doctor to tell you what he thinks the classic symptoms are! It is hard to have a more “classic picture”.

Studies show that iron deficiency is one of the most common ways to present with celiac disease. Celiac disease can cause just about ANY symptoms. Also, some people with celiac disease have few if any symptoms. So the ONLY way to look for and to find people with celiac disease is to do lots of blood tests on just about everybody.

Gluten sensitivity (the gluten syndrome) causes symptoms exactly the same as celiac disease, but there is not intestinal damage.

Currently, many doctors are unfamiliar with the various ways that celiac disease can manifest and that gluten can cause huge problems over and above that of celiac disease.

You need to get the blood test for celiac/gluten problems. The eClinic can help you with this.”

300 diseases and symptoms

There is a web page that the University of Chicago put up which documents 300 diseases and symptoms that are attributable to gluten. And that’s what makes it so tricky. It’s not that gluten causes the headache or gluten causes bowel trouble, it’s that gluten can cause just about anything and therefore of course the sceptics think well if something can cause anything it must be hocus pocus and can’t be true.

“Celiac Disease presents with as many as 300 different symptoms and associations” from chicago:
