A typical gluten related illness

Joseph is a typical gluten intolerant child, he is now 12 years old. He came to my clinic when he was 10 years old complaining mostly about his tummy pain. Joseph had been complaining and whinging every morning about his sore tummy. He had also had constipation, that is difficulty passing his bowel motions. He was often bloated with a tight-feeling tummy. He also had some regurgitation of acid into his mouth and felt his stomach was burning at times. Finally, his parents thought that he was more tired than he should be and seem to lack energy. Yes, a typical gluten related illness

I organized his gluten antibody tests (AGA) and they were very high. He also carries the DQ2/ DQ8 gene for celiac disease. But there was no evidence of celiac disease (his tTG andEMA and DGP tests were all normal).  He went on to strict gluten-zero diet and completely recovered – within just a few weeks!  He has been compliant with the start because his tummy pains have vanished and his bowel motions are back to normal. He is has got back to normal energy.
This is a typical story of gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity. So many of these children are just ignored. Tummy pains are thought to be “normal” by so many people.  There are huge numbers of children suffering from gluten intolerance –  undiscovered, ignored and not understood.  I would love to see all of these children appropriately diagnosed and treated.  We have to keep spreading the word.

How to stop gluten harm.

The best way to stop the harm of tobacco – is not to smoke it. The best way to stop the harm of gluten – is not to eat it.

The diagnosis of gluten syndrome (without the bowel damage of CD) is made by elimination and challenge – that means getting sick/ill/symptoms eating gluten, and feeling well Gluten-free (or better Gluten Zero). But it is a lot more complicated that this.  The problem is that gluten can give you asymptomatic disease (slowly in the background – without you knowing it – your immune runs down and autoimmune disease can be triggered).
I argue in my book “Gluten: ZERO Global  (here is the link – Gluten: ZERO Global) that the only safe thing to do about gluten is for everyone to totally avoid it.
Gluten can give: any symptoms, to any body at any time.
Go gluten Free.  Go Gluten Zero.
